How can I edit the audio in an AVI file?

This is SIMPLY what I am trying to do : load up an AVI movie file in a program that will allow me to edit the audio (clean it up and use plugins to make it clearer) and then save the AVI file. Every program has a highlight that goes something like “EXTRACT AUDIO FROM VIDEO FILE!!” and I’m like….then WHAT? Is that all your program can do? That’s cool and all but if you can extract the audio why the hell cant you ADD it???? This is so mind boggling. There are so many little things like this that should be able to be accomplished with (what should be) numerous amounts of software…instead I am forced to have to invent the damn app myself! Wow!? All I want to do is edit the audio in a video file and save that information! How complex is that? Amazing!
