Does any one know of Free software for recording audio directly to the harddrive using windows XP?

I would like to record voice/audio directly to the hard drive for editing. I would also like to be able to convert the files from wav to wma or mp3. The only software I found that comes with windows XP is sound recorder, which does not appear to record more than one minute. is there any freeware available to accomplish what I would like to accomplish?
