home video format conversion?

I have a JVC HD video camera. When downloading my films to the computer, the camera will only “talk” to the editing software that came with it and uses Quick Time (.mov). I wish to make a movie using either Nero or Windows Movie Maker but neither of these supports the .MOV format in which the camera shoots the pictures. Is it possible at any stage to convert from .MOV to a compatible format for the other two editing programs? If so, please tell me how.
