What free/cheap software would be good to get for video editing?

I’ve used avid and adobe in the past for video editing (professional). I would like a program for home use and want something that has more capabilities than Windows Movie Maker, but not as expensive as avid or adobe. I’m looking for a fairly sophisticated program, but am willing to cut some corners to save money. Free/Cheap is ideal.

For home use I will suggest DVD slideshow builder, it supports more video formats and allows you to customize your dvd menu.
