MAC vs VAIO? VAIO vs MAC? Which should an artist/engineer buy?

Scenario: I am an engineering student whose hobbies are photo editing, video production, web design. During the day, I write C programs for PICs and layout schematics for circuits. In my past time, I edit videos & pictures and design websites/CSS.

I do similar things: OrCAD, Eagle, SolidWorks, CCS for PICs, IAR for ARMs, Xilinx, VB6. I’m an engineering consultant mostly for the medical device industry, and mostly I do design and prototyping.

A lot of designer software is available for both Mac and PC. I have friends back in Moscow that do graphic, art, web design all on PC. However, most engineering software is not available for Mac. I would strongly recommend a PC (Vaio) with Windows XP.
