I want to purchase a new HDV camcorder but is my PC software/hardware going to work with it? TEN POINTS!?

I am running Adobe Premeire Elements 3.0 which says it can handle HDV video files.

My PC is an eMachines with 2GB of virtual ram, a celeron 3.33GHz processor, 300GB hard drive, and a 256MB video HD video card.

I have been editing with Premeire Elements 3.0 and standard definition (MiniDV tapes) for about a year and everything has been running fine. But I am intrested in getting a new HD MiniDV camcorder which can record at both DV and HDV formats.

I am planning on shooting in HDV then loading the footage into my PC (firewire), editing with Adobe Premiere Elements 3.0, then burning the final film to a standard DVD.

I know the edited footage will NOT be in HD but I don’t care. I just want a HD master copy of my footage (the MiniDV tape from the camcorder) to hold on to.

Will this work on my PC hardware? Should I just continue shooting in DV rather than HDV or will the picture quality be better if I shoot in HD then transfer to standard DVD format?

Please help..

Both DV and HDV take exactly the same amount of disk space: 3.6MB/sec which is about 13GB/hr. In terms of hard drive space and speed, there is no difference between the two formats. HDV puts more stress on your CPU, RAM, and video card though.

When you connect an HDV camcorder to a PC by firewire and play an HDV tape, you have two options: the camcorder can output HDV, or it can downconvert to DV.

If you set it to output HDV, you will be capturing and editing in full high definition. Your editing software must support HDV of course. For editing HDV, your PC is a little slow I think. It will work but effects will take a long time to render.

If you set the camcorder to downconvert to DV, then it is exactly like editing DV like you do now. The PC will think your camera is a DV camcorder and the data looks exactly like regular standard definition DV. This way, you don’t have to change anything about your PC. Your edited videos will only be in standard definition but you’ll have the high definition HDV version stored on tape, which you can re-capture in HDV in the future if you want to edit in high def.

A third option is to use an HDV camcorder but record to tape in DV mode. In this case, your tape will be standard definition DV and can be played back in any DV camcorder or deck, and edited just like regular DV on your PC. This is a good option if you will be handing the tapes over to someone who can play DV but not HDV. Obviously the video won’t be high definition though.

If your output destination is DVD, then there is a small advantage to capturing and editing in HDV instead of DV. Although DV and DVD have the same luma (B&W) resolution, DV and DVD use different chroma (color) subsampling (DV is 4:1:1 and DVD is 4:2:0). Going from DV to DVD results in a blurry chroma signal. Going direct from HDV footage to DVD eliminates that problem. Your DVDs will be a little sharper as a result, but still not as good as HD.

Really, if you’re going to all the effort to edit HDV, you should find a way to deliver in HD. For example, on the web or as a video file on a data disc. Using MPEG-4 or H.264 (AVC) codecs, you can get very good quality HD in a reasonable file size. Most computers can play MPEG-4 at 720p without difficulty and the quality improvement compared to DV is stunning!
