Editing videos – where to start?

I’d like to teach myself to edit videos. Obviously I’ll start with the basics like cutting, dubbing etc but eventually I’d like to be able to do some more flashy stuff. Does anyone have any recommendations of any online courses or guides on how to do this – free if possible but not entirely necessary. Also, what software should I use. Would it be better to start with a basic programme and upgrade later or jump straight into something a little more complex and get to know that really well? Hope somebody can help this novice!
