How can I convert MOV files into a format for Windows Movie Maker?

I have just downloaded Windows movie maker and found to my horror that I cannot import MOV files. This is a disaster because all the videos recorded on my camera are Movs. Is there any way to convert them into a format compatible with windows movie maker.
Which are; .avi, .mpg, .m1v, .mp2v, .mpeg, .mpe, .mpv2, .wm, .wmv, .asf
And will this conversion effect the quality of the recordings.
If this is not possible can you please suggest alternative editing software which is compatible with Movs.
