Video Editing Software On Windows 7

video editing software?
i have to do a video project for my french class.
it has to be about 6-7 minutes long.
not very complicated yet not simple,
and i need some type of video editing software besides Windows movie maker (not very good) that i can get for free or a free trial?
it doesn’t have to have all those fancy tools like adobe after effects, but not as simple as movie maker.
ideas?
i run on Windows XP by the way
