What type of video editing software would you recommend?

I’m looking for a program to edit videos with the following criteria:
-takes flip videos (windows media player doesn’t)
-allows cool effects and music (flipshare doesn’t)
-is inexpensive (I’m on a budget)
-offers a free trial version (in case there’s something about it I don’t like)
